London-based designer Emma Ware has intrigued us. As a Wimbledon School of Arts graduate, with a background in fine art, film, and TV, Emma utilizes reclaimed materials by creating them into intricate pieces of artwork. Combining textures for an elegant contrast, she uses hand-sculpted recycled rubber and chains in her accessories.

Emma emphasizes sustainability in all of her works- like her edgy accessories line, the re:cycle collection. And not to worry, although the necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and chains may look harmful, they contain malleable rubber that moves to the warmth of your body- not sharp in texture, but sharp in style! Go intimidate someone.

Freedom & Fashion

Ecologique Fashion attended the second annual Freedom and Fashion event in Irvine earlier this month. It was a not-for-profit fashion show that advocated fair trade and ethical employment practices. The event was primarily concerned with sex trafficking and spread awareness about the subject throughout the evening. Several partners of Freedom and Fashion were in attendance, during both the trade show and runway portions of the event, sharing their goods.

The runway show began with an appearance by the bubbly Jeannie Mai of The Style Network wearing a gorgeous aqua-colored gown. Following Jeannie were appearances by musical artists Esna Yoon and Dr. E-- who herself was a survivor of sex trafficking. Allison Trowbridge of Not For Sale then spoke about modern slavery and shocked many with her valid statistics on human slave trade practices.

Among the designers that were featured in the runway show, ALL were partnering businesses that helped support Freedom and Fashion's goal of raising money to prevent sex trafficking. Kristinit, Anita Arze, and Falling Whistles (whistle necklaces designed to build awareness about the children subject to the war in Congo), and Tag Bag (hand bags made from recycled South African license plates) were a few of my personal favorites.

NAEM Denim

Miss Kim, Founder of Freedom and Fashion

The finale of the show presented the Freedom and Fashion 2011 collection, which consisted of dark and sultry pieces and lots and lots of RED- inspired by the freedom gained from those who were once victims of sex trafficking. Bonnie Kim, founder of Fashion and Freedom brought the evening to a close with her condolences and a speech encouraging others to support her cause in the effort to demolish the human slave trade phenomenon.

The Greener Side of LA Fashion Weekend

This fall, the Green Youth Movement took the green-repping reigns by producing LA Fashion Weekend's "The Green Initiative Humanitarian Fashion Show" held at The Gallery Los Angeles. The event with filled with an eclectic and anxious crowd of bloggers, designers, scenesters, and fashionistas who all happily embraced the collections of ethical designers Jonano, Keokojay, Kristinit, and Emily Factor.

The runway show commenced with a friendly welcome by The Gallery's own Mikey Koffman, followed an inspiring speech highlighting the importance of sustainability for future generations by 16-year old GYM president, Chloe Mills.

Jonano represented a softer side of organics with their simple, yet elegantly romantic pieces.

Keokojay romped the runway with a more fun and funky boheme feel - comfortably light and beautiful.

Kristinit's collection consisted of beautifully feminine cuts and fabrics, breezy pastels, intricate pattern meshing and sex-kitten sophisticated lace.

Emily Factor's Collection was like taking a trip into a technicolor, flowery, flowing wonderland. One could say they felt like Alice lying in the daisies as the collection exuded a very youthful and free feeling.

Katcha's Transformations

Katcha Bilek has always had a passion for transforming things rather than throwing them away. In her 20's she travelled all over Europe and learned several languages, giving a multi-cultural outlook to her art. In 1999 while living and traveling in a converted fire truck, she began making bags that utilized the leather techniques she had learned during travels to Spain, out of used and readily available inner tubes.

Katcha's current collection, Re-Collect, consists of a series of bags and purses made from used truck inner tubes and old car seatbelts. Each one is handmade and unique- cut and sewn in Katcha's Bristol workshop. In addition to being recycled and collected locally, the materials used act as a wonderful alternative to animal products.

Her creative talent doesn't just end there, Katcha is also quite popular for her recycled art and installations. Here is one of her most recent projects- bike wheel chandeliers:

Some Fab Eco finds @ THREAD SD

This September I made an appearance at THREAD -- "a curated showcase of the best emerging, trend forecasting, style breaking, genre bending fashion designers, and the music and art that rock their world " -- that came back to visit San Diego, it's original launch pad.

Founded by Lara Matthews in 2003, THREAD offers indie artists and fashion designers a platform, or "hot spot", to represent their goods. What once began as small, casual trunk shows in Lara's backyard became THREAD - a successful fashion and lifestyle event. And at 8 years old it keeps on kickin' in cities like Seattle, the OC, Frisco, and LA!

To paint for you the aesthetics: Beautiful people, 40-some vendors, chandeliers, live wall art by Art Kills Artists, mannequin bodies, and a green runway featuring models adorned in the latest in fall's fashions.

What I loved about THREAD this year was not only the cocktail sampling (yums), but how they incorporated local restaurants through NOSH... and did I mention they had Eco Fashion in the house?

Raeburn Re-Appropriating

Christopher Raeburn, a graduate from London's Royal College of Arts, is fast becoming known for his pioneering work towards the future of ethical design. Christopher utilises re-appropriated military fabrics to create garments that are functional, intelligent and meticulously crafted.

The fabrics come from the UK, Germany and the Czech Republic, and also from the former East Germany. The clothes are all made in Britain.

Christoper graduated in 2006, and won the Ethical Fashion Forum's Innovation competition in 2008. His collection was a set of eight parachute pieces, and was shown at London Fashion Week the same year. Since 2008, Christopher has won many competitions and done a collaboration with established menswear designer Tim Soar. His great sense for detail, fabric and design is making him one of the most innovative designers of our age.

Here Ye, Here Ye!... or shall we say "Ahoy Matey"? Hot off the [screen printing] press come A QUESTION OF's two new ode-to-the-past prints; La Mariniére and Wisdom.

La Mariniére, originally made for the French Navy, has been respected by French sailors and adopted by designers such as Coco Chanel, and embraced by fashion houses like Gaultier and Galliano! This maritime icon has became one of fashions most prized and timeless patterns.

It's a Green Day Festival, "a multi-city campaign dedicated to connecting people to resources and information for a greener planet.." held their latest at Liberty Station Park in San Diego, CA. I went by to scope out the scene and take a gander at the grassy runway and Eco Fashion Show featuring local San Diegans.

Of the designer's showing, two were students from Fashion Careers College-- Jessica Serafin and Oseas Villatoro-- who utilized recycled materials and odd goods [like shower curtains!]
in their works.

News that a Vintage Collective/Art Gallery had opened up in San Diego gave me hope, inspiration and above all appreciation to those artists and vintage lovers who came together to fill a huge space with colorful modern art, eclectic retro furniture and nostalgic pieces from our past lives.

Owners Jan Welch and Jon Elliot invested their time and creative energies into designing Bedouin Vintage Collective, which offers home to artisans around San Diego who specialize in things like jewelry, home accessories and fun crafts.

In addition to the wonderful treasures that are abundant within this boutique, The Collective seconds as an art gallery displaying unique pieces from artists all around the world.

During my visit, I was lucky enough to snag a cut-off vintage Padres t-shirt and 1970's striped maxi halter dress... !

Veja - Is Another World Possible?

Veja is "just a drop in the ocean", they state on their website. Luckily for us, this drop exists and there are becoming more and more of them.

With organic cotton from the Northeast of Brazil, wild Amazonian rubber and ecological leather; Veja is working under three main principles:

1. Using ecological inputs

2. Using fair-trade cotton and latex

3. Respecting workers' dignity

In order to reduce CO2 emissions, all trainers and accessories are transported by boat from Porto Alegre, Brazil to Le Havre, France. From there they travel in barges along the canals to the Parisian suburbs.

They use recycled paper and cardboard for their packaging, and finally Veja uses ENERCOOP (a cooperative of green electricity) in their headquarters instead of EDF (the French national nuclear energy supplier).

"Let's try to offer a different vision which combines fair-trade and ecology and links together economy, social initiatives and the environment. A vision that proposes cultural change."

A Purrrfect Sunday

While in the City of Angels, my friend and I decided to stretch our legs from all the wine and girl talk and go out into the hot, hot sun for an adventure in rummage shopping. Our journey took us to the marvelously never-ending and glorious Fairfax and Melrose flea market!

Oh what a treat to see so much random 'stuff' being reused and reconstructed into furniture, jewelry, clothing... they even had old vinyl (which actually made me nervous because the cement was super hot) and yummy snow cones!

Walking around and enjoying the ice cool cherry/lemon treat, my lovely friend and I ran into a tent full of amazing handmade and one-of-a-kind works by Purrr Remake - "Tokyo inspired remake clothing for LA hipstars". I took a peek at the designer's site when I got back into town and realized that her pieces sell in boutiques around Japan for about 3-times the price... So check out her etsy if your not near LA!

The rack was full of super cute rompers in all kinds of fun patterns; nauticals, plaids, stripes, and even funky prints. Each romper was also conveniently constructed with an adjustable drawstring that was designed to fit most.

A print dawned with black spotted kitties ended up being a fun retro-chic addition to my animal-loving friend Blair's wardrobe.

The Melrose Trading Post flea market is held every Sunday- totally worth checking out!

Hopping on the "Zero-Waste" Train

Although many are adopting new means of fashionable consumption through wearing organic or buying second-hand, these acts alone are simply not going to cut it when it comes to making a dent of true sustainability in the fashion industry as we know it.

Reality Check: Because it is cheaper to dump fabric scraps than recycle them, 15-20% of apparel production fabric ends up as waste! (per NY Times)

A more efficient and thoroughly sustainable concept that will allow style to save us is Zero-Waste, a production process that has already been utilized in other countries, by designers like Zandra Rhodes and Mark Liu. Zero-Waste gives designers the challenge of using the entirety of their fabrics without any -or very little- waste. Involving much conception and intricate patterns, zero-waste planning must be carefully calculated in order to achieve ultimate utilization.

In September of this year, Parson New School for Design is offering the first U.S. fashion course in zero-waste. In addition to the publication of two new books on the subject, zero-waste has also inspired the A + D Gallery of Chicago that is planning for an exhibition dedicated to zero-waste fashions due March of 2011.

And so we are catching on. May I add a big F I N A L L Y ! ! ?

Ali Hewson couldn't possibly have guessed how life would turn out when she met her future husband at Dublin's Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1975. Her high school sweetheart, Paul, now known as Bono, perhaps the biggest rock star (and according to Time in 2009, one of the most influential people) in the world - thanks to his many charitable initiatives. In 2005, the couple launched EDUN, a fashion company that promotes trade above aid in Africa and other developing countries by using factories that pay fair wages, creating jobs and encouraging investment in these areas. These days Hewson divides her time between family, campaigning and running the now multinational company.

In May 2009, luxury group LVMH took a substantial stake in the company adding EDUN to their stable of world-class brands. With the expertise and support of LVMH, EDUN now have the tools to become a global fashion brand.

While EDUN's primary focus is trade, the brand actively engages in sourcing organic and sustainable materials whenever possible. Organic cotton is not only a responsible environmental solution, but also provides healthier working conditions and is a valuable market opportunity for farmers in Africa.

Arne & Carlos - Preserving century-old knitting techniques

Arne Nerjordet and Carlos Zachrison, Norwegian and Swedish respectively, established Arne & Carlos in 2002. Drawing on their traditional Scandinavian influences and their natural environment, they create original and visually striking knitwear. Through experience gained from working alongside Scandinavia's most respected knitting practitioners, many of them elderly women using century-old techniques, Arne & Carlos seek to preserve these techniques as well as create pieces that are modern and new.

While Arne & Carlos' speciality knitwear draws on Scandinavian traditions for inspiration, it is Peru and its long history of artisanal skills, that forms the base for the designers' production. All knitwear is crafted by artisans, with half of the collection being hand-made, the other half machine-made, and the finish on all garments done by hand.

Arne & Carlos' creative base however is located 190 kilometers north of Oslo in the Valdres region of Norway, in a disused railway station. This idyllic location is a source of inspiration as well as a haven for peace and tranquility. There, Arne & Carlos absorb the rich tradition of Scandinavian arts and crafts while adding their own personal inspirations.

Here Kitty, Kitty...

Once upon a time...

there was a Kitty who believed that eco-styled footwear could be beautiful.

Footwear designer, Kitty Cooper, gained her fashionable background by earning a first-class degree at Cordwainers' Institute, part of London College of Fashion, and working for a time designing China-made shoes for a number of High Street retailers. Her love and expertise of vintage comes from several years of experience dealing vintage clothing and accessories in various shops of London.

Inspired by the aesthetics and craftsmanship of past eras, The Kitty Cooper Collection is handmade in East London. The beautiful fabrics, buttons, ribbons, and trims are all locally sourced vintage pieces from the 20's to the 70's. Oooh yes!

Keeping consistent with her mission, Kitty's shoes include only leathers tanned using organic substances such as the seed pods of the Tara tree or the Valonea oak.

Not only does her product lend an ode to the past, the packing contributes to sustainability by including 100% post-consumer recycled, non-bleached paper, and organic fairtrade shoe bags with every purchase.

In 1991, Co-owner and Creative Director, Inder Bedi, was challenged by a mahatma to go vegetarian for thirty days. It was during this time that Inder devised the business plan for an eco/vegan fashion house.

First written as a university project in 1995, and eventually launched as MATT & NAT, Inder focused on cutting edge fashion, social responsibility, and a balance of opposites emerges, thus representing the duality of MATT & NAT's soul.

MATT & NAT’s 21 water bottle initiative has further advanced their commitment to social responsibility and to the environment; all linings are made from recycled plastic water bottles. A message inside of each bag will let you know exactly how many bottles were recycled to produce your accessory.

In my opinion, Matt & Nat's men's collection captures current trends very well, which unfortunately is not so common within ecological fashion. The style is simple with easily recognizable shapes as well as clean lines. Both of which, I think, are very important in men's fashion, in particular. As well as being made from recycled bottles, the bags are made from canvas and vegan leather with details like heavy buckles metal zips and metal studs.

I love the perforated detailing on the front of the wallet, as well as its slender and sophisticated look.

All Baron Wells products are designed to promote a sartorial and sustainable lifestyle. They are designed and developed in New York City. From tailored shirts to fitted board shorts, their ethics is to be conscious of their impact, and of the factories they choose to work with. Producing locally and sourcing more sustainable materials, is as important as their sense of style and craftmanship.

Baron Wells is a small focused collection of shirts, sea pants, neckwear and accessories for both men and women. Modeled after the young wayfarers in search of perfectly peeling waves in Bruce Brown's 1968 classic, "The Endless Summer", with just a little quirk thrown in for good measure.

Recycled Fashion Embraces QR Technology

Since the introduction of QR (Quick Response) codes, many businesses are making the shift to mobile technology to keep up with the rapid changes of the market.

Fashion Camp LA, a conference held in June of this year, offered a great intro to QR-codes with speaker Philip Warbasse, creator of the True Blood QR code and CEO of Warbasse Design. In his presentation, Warbasse explained QR as a technique that would enable users to engage in immediate content thus integrating their on and offline experiences.

Offering consumers an additional means of instant information through several medias, including the bonus of exclusive content, is something that would not only engage consumers, but allow businesses a better understanding of how online experiences affect consumer’s offline decisions and vice versa. Currently big in Japan, QR codes are expected to be quite predominant in the states come the holiday season (according to Warbasse).

A project called “RememberMe”, a collaborative of the Oxfam shop in Manchester and Tales of Things, has taken QR technology to a more personable level that tends to the customer experience, satisfaction, and recycled fashion education. The project's initiative?--to allow the ability to retrieve/record background info on used/second-hand items.

Ever wonder exactly where that $2 denim skirt you bought at the thrift store came from? Who wore it, where they acquired it, or how old it actually is?

At the May 2010 Future Everything Festival, RememberMe was put to the test as a research assistant was based in the Oxfam shop recording nostalgic stories on the clothing pieces and other objects that were donated. The memories were converted into audio clips and linked to QR codes in which were attached to the goods for sale.

In order to store and track the stories behind the objects, as well as connect people with similar experiences, Tales of Things launched a website that assists those trying to sell their second-hands on ebay or other e-commerce sites by allowing the media-link through QR from their beta site.

Per the Ecouterre website, RememberMe “has a loftier goal than just giving old clothes the opportunity to speak for themselves. By offering a new way for people to attach value to their 'stuff,' RememberMe could render goods less disposable.”

Pour L'homme: Vegetarian Desert Boots

The original desert boot was created in 1950 by Nathan Clark who got the idea from crepe-soled, rough suede boots which officers in the Eight Army were in the habit of getting made in the Bazaar in Cairo. Now one of the largest footwear companies in the world, Clarks England is also one of the oldest. From its humble beginnings in 1825, in the tiny English village of Street, Somerset, to a global company that manufactures and markets close to 35 million pairs of shoes a year.

The Clarks Original desert boot has been reinvented by many designers such as Aquascutum, Common Projects and Pierre Hardy. Its characteristics are soft, supple full grain leather uppers and a genuine plantation crepe outsole, and two eyelets. 60 long years after it made its début, the Desert Boot lives on. Its simplicity, its versatility and its individuality have all helped to secure its place on the roll-call of iconic designs. It’s a cult classic. Every man’s ideal shoe and one that would look great in your wardrobe.

"Veggie Shoes first started in 1990. When I started the business back then, I made all the shoes by hand. In fact, originally I only made one style - a basic lace up shoe. I had started to teach myself to make shoes four years earlier after leaving Art College. I was inspired to hear that in parts of Africa, car tires were recycled into soles. This got me thinking and soon I was making shoes out of anything I could lay my hands on, but being veggie I didn't want to use leather. Then I made an exciting discovery, -a synthetic Microfibre material used for yachting upholstery. It looked and felt like supple leather, but was 'breathable', unlike other plastics. After some experimenting, I realised that this was what I had been looking for, and Vegetarian Shoes was born.

Nowadays, I no longer make shoes (which I do not miss, as it was blooming hard work !). Most of our shoes are made-to-order for us, exclusively to our specification in European and English factories, including the oldest co-op in the country, established in 1881. Vegetarian Shoes is still a small business, and we still operate out of our Gardner Street Shop and nearby office in Brighton, UK. We now send shoes all over the world and a growing number of stores carry a selected range".

As part of Vegetarian Shoe new line, we find the the classic, casual, light-weight, lace-up desert boot. Made in super soft-to-touch breathable fake-suede microfiber. Utilitarian, practical and stylish. Insole is padded for foot comfort and perforated for moisture absorption/transmission in hot climates. Rugged, double thread stitch-down sole construction. Beautifully finished with corduroy rear and tongue lining and reinforced heel lining. It comes in sand, brown and black.

What exactly constitutes as ethical fashion, you ask?

Ethical : Fashion that contributes to environmentalism and social responsibility.

Sustainable : Fashion that is typically concerned with harmonizing economic, environmental and social aspects in the production of their pieces.

Eco-friendly : Fashion that inflicts minimal to no harm on the environment. These goods usually contain no animal products.

Organic : Fashion produced with non-synthetic materials that are grown without the use of chemicals, such a pesticides etc.

Recycled and Reconstructed : Fashion that makes something old something new again. Typically recycled clothing is of thrift shop or vintage origin. Designers take these once used pieces, and reconstruct them to create beautiful, new works of art.

Casey Larkin's "Fallen Fairy" series for Mr. Larkin A/W 2010 was inspired by musicians Tori Amos and Karen O of the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. The collection includes organic cotton, hemp silk, and recycled polyester drop-crotch harem pant suits, high-waistey jodhpurs, and flared miniskirts. Sasha Duerr complimented the line with print dyes that were developed using Japanese maple leaves, acorns, and mint.

Ariel Clay also modeled for the line (she's the pretty red head). Clay is an eco-model and advocate of socially and environmentally responsible modeling. She works with some of the best in eco fashion and eco-friendly products.

What does it really mean to be
an "ethical consumer"?

Really, it can mean a lot of things!

As consumers we have a great impact on economic trends...

As independent peeps, we tend to focus on products that enhance our fabulous lives; as “marrieds” we have a great deal of influence on our mate's appearance and the items they purchase; as parents we make decisions that effect all of our family members and their future consumption habits.

What we must always keep in mind is that many of these product choices can either negatively or positively effect our environment, increasing our individual carbon footprint. To be certain we take dainty, little carbon steps --leaving minimal waste-- we must become more aware of the products we purchase as well as their lifecycle and origin.

The goal: to become an ethical consumer by maintaining a positive balance within the products we use to survive, maintain health, keep up with current trends, and look great.

Before you pick up a product or make an impulsive purchase, try to imagine the product benefit, its effect on the earth, the amount of use you will get out of that product, and its disposal.

It is not to say that every single thing that you buy should come in a recycled package, contain no additives, preservatives, or artificial ingredients. To be quite honest, although more and more companies are now adopting sustainable practices, it can difficult at times to find an eco-alternative to what we have been taught for many years to consume!

In my humble opinion, it is all about balance. If a product brings forth more benefit than it does damage to the environment, then it is most likely a better choice. To be more aware of your purchasing habits and to make shifts concerning those habits [towards saving energy and utilizing products that minimize our carbon influences] are GREAT contributions!

It’s also very important to be more knowledgeable about labels and the ingredients that are in the products we buy. Must I make a reference to the phrase “you are what you eat”? We need to be more aware of what we put in/on our face, our bodies... OUR SKIN!

Per the handy Gorgeously Girl App (a great shopping buddy), here’s an example of some top “red alert” chemicals, commonly found in beauty/hygiene products, that should be avoided:

1) Coal Tar (found in some toothpastes)
2) Fragrance (often contain hormone-disrupting chemicals)
3) Hydroquinone (found in skin lighteners/facial moisturizers)
4) Aluminum (found in deodorants and in cosmetics as color additives)
5) Triciosan (used in anti-bacterial products)
6) P-Phenylendiamin, 1, 4 Benzenediamine, and p-Phenyldiamin, and 4-Phenylenediamine (chemicals found in hair dyes)
7) Lead and Mercury (difficult to detect- *tip: look for lead-free lipsticks)

The key is to be more observant-- and I’m not talking about how short that chick’s skirt was, or how trashy her makeup looked. [Quite frankly, if it was eco-friendly, came in a recycled cardboard package, and donated a percentage of profits to Haiti relief efforts -- more power to her!]

We research the schools we want to go to, the “potentials” we would like to date (thanks to facebook), and the vacations we would like to take… how about paying more attention to the small things we often take for granted? --The stuff that we are exposed to on the daily.

Unless you are an alien to this planet, you must know that once a product "goes Hollywood", sales skyrocket!

Kudos to Ecoist, an awesome handmade bag brand, that is now the latest 'buzz' due to some prime product placement.

Refreshing, because it's really about time that some green products get their debuts on the big screen.. along with some well deserved attention!

Ecoist is especially cool, because they are a key contributor in recycling those extra odd post-industrial waste wrappers that manufacturers tend to trash. Ecoist's specialty is utilizing these extra candy wrappers, soda bottle labels, and other waste-bound materials into the construction and design of their bags!

Remember the days of buying a stick of Starburst candies only to eat while simultaneously creating some sweet friendship bracelets? --it's kinda like that, except without the extra calories.

Ok.. so I rarely get all infatuated with clothing, accessories, and material things.

Who am I kidding?!

I am a twenty-something gen-y lady who has been trained since birth to become an ideal consumer. Although I have mended my ways and have consolidated my life to be more green/eco-friendly, the temptation to buy is there at times--especially now thanks to Matt and Nat!

Giving in to such a lovely purse would grant that instant gratification/satisfaction I am desiring, but upon wearing off might only leave me feeling guilt and material-consumption remorse.

If you are going to do social media, skip the gossip feed and find a site that exemplifies your talents and gifts and coordinates them with the efforts of others. For those interested in the most upcoming and innovative textiles/products associated with the fashion industry.. might I make a suggestion?

The Ethical Fashion Forum is a terrific not-for-profit network focusing particularly on social and environmental sustainability. A site founded by fashion designers and business owners looking for a way to contribute to sustainable practices, the EFF "has been developed by the industry, for the industry".

The forum is primarily made up of designers, students, manufacturers, and business owners. Of these contributors, EFF's Associate Director, Amisha Ghadiali, and her london-based political awareness group, Think, Act, Vote most recently partnered with ethical fashion label Komodo in the effort of producing a carbon neutral t-shirt. The t-shirt was introduced to a slew of London's eco-designers who were given the opportunity to take the 100% organic cotton garment into their workshops for a little T-LC.

Designers such as Junky Styling, Ada Zanditon, Mia, Nancy Dee, Tara Starlet and Miksani took part in this one-week challenge to apply their spin on the tee using only left-over fabrics from their previous collections.

The collection of unique tees were seen at UK Aware, Alternative Fashion Week, and will be on display at Think, Act, Vote's "The Future I Choose Celebration" May 5, 2010.

Since the birth of her line in March 2008, Ada Zanditon has presented her collections at the Ethical Fashion Show in Paris, the Estethica show at London Fashion week, and has been showcased in China. She incorporates a variety of organic and natural fabrics as well as innovated waste-reducing/energy-consious solutions into the creation of her elegant fashions.

As a first class graduate from the London College of Fashion, Ada interned with names such as Alexander McQueen and Jonathan Saunders, prior to developing her own line of ethical womenswear.

Ada receives her fabrics from only ethical manufacturers. She uses AZO-free dyes and eco materials ranging from Fair Trade Organic Cotton and Tencel to English Cherry Tree Wood and Hebridean Wool.

All of the garments are produced and manufactured in small sample rooms and factories near Ada's studio, where she promotes a close-business relationship with those involved in the creation of her pieces. Her business ethic also includes a zero waste policy in which all left-over fabric is used for such things as quilting or shoulder pads.

The green fashion movement has opened a market for ethical fashion to consumers. The Ecologique Fashion Show in San Diego, CA, organized by creative director Andrea Krystine, gave us a first hand look at how green fashion is changing the values behind the production of clothes. The designer lineup at Ecologique included clothing made from organic linen, organic cotton, hemp and organic wool. Designer Meiling Chen, introduced her line of Eco-couture that included waste free clothes with hand-dyed designs and organic fabrics, while Icelandic designer Unnur Fridriksdottir, presented handbags made of sea leather. Instead of using real leather, Unnur uses farm grown Icelandic Salmon and farm grown African Perch. Pants to Poverty, a San Diego based underwear company, fits right in with the ethical production of fashion. Their bright colored underwear uses Zameen Organic, which is a farmer owned marketing company for fair-trade and organic cotton. Other Eco-features of the show included a variety of reconstructed vintage pieces and recycled accessories all tinted with the inspiration of nature.

The message behind this ecological production of clothing is to be economical and to reuse. If most of us look into our closets, it is likely that we will be encountering some synthetic fabrics like polyester, rayon or nylon. Toxic non-sustainable materials are composed of crude oil, coal and petroleum. Much of the reconstructed and recycled clothing re-uses these materials to prevent disposing of them. “If it’s already there, it’s better to utilize it....we need to do our research on what we are purchasing and where we are purchasing it from, but we don’t want to dispose of our clothing, we want to reuse it, recycle it and make it last.” says Andrea. While the organic clothing market is flourishing, it is still better to limit consumption. Andrea suggests getting together with friends and doing clothing exchange parties, she says, “Get together and trade clothes. This is an easy and affordable contribution to the movement,” she says. Thrift stores and vintage shops are artistic, ecological and economical venues for purchasing and exchanging clothing, so one may also consider taking advantage of the many resources that economical shopping offers.

Andrea believes that Eco-fashion is just one thing among many that contributes to the potential that we have to stepping up and choose renovating, creative and environmental ways to live. “This is about our existence, utilizing the things that we have now and making our world a better place despite the distress. We need to take care of our environment, we need to take care of the people, we need to donate our time and contribute,” says Andrea.

During my travels to NY I was lucky enough to be able to swing by Bust Magazine's Craftacular, an annual event of which was held this year at The Metropolitan Pavilion.

Artisans and vendors of all kinds were lined up in several rows inside the pavilion awaiting the long line--as long as an NY city block-- of anxious attendees. For only 2 bucks a ticket, what kind of self-respected arsty female wouldn't want to attend such an amazing convention?

Maroussia Rebecq, founder of Parisian fashion line Andrea Crews Collective, knows just how to upcycle unwanted garbs and make them into eccentric new art pieces. Her works have been seen on such artists as Santigold, Yelle, Olivia of The Do, and Metronomy.

The name, "Andrea Crews" signifies a masked person whose name might just belong to a man in Germany or a woman in Italy highlighting the fact that this 'collective' is made up of multiple facets and collaborations. Eco-consious 'Mr. Larkin' made an impressive impact on all who attended the The Green Shows, a two-day event that took place in Soho sponsored by The Rainforest Action Network.

Designer Casey Larkin's collection included organic, sustainable, and renewable textiles. Organic cotton, peace silk, bamboo muslin and tulle were utilized in all of her pieces. All of the dyes used were derived from plants and vegetables such as blackberries, olives, fig, acorn, and sour grass.

Lara Miller Holiday Collection 2009

Lara Miller is greatly influenced by architectural aspects of her hometown of Chicago. Her designs have been featured on Elle.com, The Today Show, NY Times, WWD, Lucky Magazine, and many others.

In addition to doing her best to limit her carbon footprint, Lara's designs are created by hand pattern making and draping which allows her to re-use old patterns and scrap material into future collections. Lara researches her materials very thoroughly to ensure that they include only low-impact reactive dyes. She has also been researching new ways of dyeing with natural sources.

Lara's garments incorporate SKAL certified cotton, hemp, vegan ahimsa peace silk, organic wool, linen, lycoll, flax, soy fibers, hand-loomed bamboo, and recycled organic cotton. Lara favors recycled organic cotton and looks forward to incorporating more in future projects as the yarn is regenerated from post-industrial scraps. By using this material, Lara can assist in reducing the need for growing crops and using dyes while also contributing to reducing the amount of waste that goes into our landfills.

Meiling Chen was introduced to fashion at a very early age watching her father creating the latest contemporary styles. Her work explores the relationship between fashion, visual design and art. Her work is greatly influenced by her Taiwanese family tradition of smart tailoring, drawing freely from her professional training, and by her curiosity and love for people, nature, writing and the arts.

Meiling’s designs are free-spirited and adventurous and contribute to organic, green fashion as her designs are hand-dyed, organic fabrics coupled with waste-free eco couture. Meiling works on fashion and design products at Me Studio Inc in New York. She has been featured on the runway of New York Fashion Week in conjunction with the international design house, Ekovaruhuset. Her belief is that a person’s clothes represent their artistic means of personal expression. Her goal is to bring fun and creativity to people’s daily lives through sustainable work.

House of Jazmin joining Ecologique!

Ecologique: Fashion for a Green Future has just confirmed Jazmin Whitley to show her Li Cari line on the runway October 17th. Although many may recognize this darling 21 year old for her MTV show, House of Jazmin, she has already accomplished what an inspiring fashion designer of twenty years has only dreamed of.

At 17 she had her very first fashion show at her school San Marino High School-- it was a huge hit! She then started creating one of a kinds for talents and socialites and one piece turned into a 36 piece collection for her first LA fashion week launching the Li Cari clothing label in Los Angeles, March 2006 as the finale of Los Angeles fashion week.

Since then, Jazmin has shown at NY fashion week’s spring summer 2007, 2008 and 2009 as the youngest designer to ever show in NY fashion week. Miss Whitley has designed her 8th collections and with amazing reviews of her Fall Winter 09 collection. Jazmin was then asked to work on a project for MTV, a TV series that would follow her life. She agreed and started shooting for the new MTV show.

San Diego is very excited that Jazmin will treating us with the beauty of her Spring/Summer '10 line on our 40-foot runway...and believe me... she will be showing up in style, as always!

"Most of my Asian friends hardly wear any makeup because they have had makeup wrecking their beautiful skin; and the few who do wear makeup are struggling with the products they have. That was what inspired me to create a line of cosmetics that a) is made with natural ingredients; b) won’t cause irritation or skin problems; c) looks and feels natural, like you have no makeup on, just having gorgeous skin. After tons of studying, researches, trial and error, brain power and just plain hard work, Beauté Minéral was born."

Ecologique: "So, how is it that you got interested in cosmetics?"

Amy: "My background is actually on the IT side – I proud myself for being the one of the non-geeky-looking programmers. I learned about cosmetics and beauty products from reading tons of beauty books, researching in any format I can, and playing with makeup any chance I have."

Ecologique: "What personal influences do you lend to Beaute Mineral?"

Amy: "I draw inspirations from the makeup artistry greats like Kevyn Aucoin and Shu Uemura, as well as from Mother Nature who provides the most beautiful color palettes imaginable. I also put a lot of my experience growing up in different beauty cultures into my products. My research & study in Aromatherapy will be the basis of an upcoming skin care line."

Ecologique: "Tell us more about your products and the ethical and sustainable practices behind them"

Amy: "Each Beauté Minéral product is hand-crafted with love and care. I firmly believe that if it is called 'mineral makeup', it should consist of “minerals” only, not things like oils, preservatives, fragrances and starches. Beauté Minéral products do not have fancy packaging, because I believe resources should be spent on what goes into the products, not the outside of the products--the lesser the packaging, the better for the environment."

When contacted to get involved with our green fashion movement, Jamie Lim, founder of KAYU Bamboo Sunglasses, was determined to help!

Jamie grew up in Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong where she became intrigued by the unique environment. The aest hetics of the region inspired her to create a line of ecological and ethical accessories-- sunglasses... but what for the material?

Jamie found the solution for her accessories in bamboo. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on earth and can restore itself in just five years. Hello Everyone!

In preparation of the big show, Saturday October 17th, we have found that many people are unaware of the positive effects of green fashion in addition to the different types of green fashion (eco-friendly, organic, reconstructed/recycled, ethical, etc).

In an effort to educate young consumers, and our community, Ecologique is putting together a mini-documentary featuring local eco-conscious businesses who are actively supporting the community.

Filming for the mini-documentary will take place in the San Diego are on Saturday, Sept 26 and Sunday Sept 27th.

We are currently casting:

Ethical : Fashion that contributes to environmentalism and social responsibility.

Sustainable : Fashion that is typically concerned with harmonizing economic, environmental and social aspects in the production of their pieces.

Eco-friendly : Fashion that inflicts minimal to no harm on the environment. These goods usually contain no animal products.

Organic : Fashion produced with non-synthetic materials that are grown without the use of chemicals, such a pesticides etc.
